Stephan and Emelia Tosczak circa 1920

Stephan Tosczak emigrated to Bulyea in Western Assiniboia in 1901 from the town of Radautz in the Austrian Crownland of Bukovina. On July 12, 1901 he arrived at the Port of New York aboard the steamer Friedrich der Grosse along with children Rosa, Josef and Johan. His wife Emelia (Czajkowska) arrived later with the rest of the children. Stephan was born in 1850 in western Galicia where his father farmed in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. He was a blacksmith by trade and lived in the city of Radautz (present day Radauti, Romania) where he had migrated as a young man. In Radautz he met and married Emelia Czajkowska, the daughter of a joiner named Johan Czajkowski. The Czajkowski family was of Polish ancestry and had settled in the area several generations earlier. Stephan and Emelia were married in the Roman Catholic Church in Radautz on June 18, 1871. Their family eventually grew to include ten children. In July 2000 I visited Radauti and surrounding areas as well as the former Galicia in western Ukraine to attempt to uncover additional information .

When the family arrived in Canada, they were one of the first five families to settle in the Francis-Odessa district of Western Assiniboia (later to become part of the province of Saskatchewan). Shortly after arriving in the district, Stephan applied for and was granted an Application for a Homestead entry from the Dominion Government on July 22, 1901 for the NE ¼ of 4-15-14-W2. It was on this property that he built the family's first home between June and August of 1902.
